WRITING AN INFORMAL LETTER

Letter writing - is an important element of communication, a personal part of experience. Each letter-writer has a distinctive way of writing, his own style of writing, his way of expressing thoughts, facts, etc.
Therefore certain skills must be acquired by practice, and details of writing must be carefully and systematically learnt.
Informal style
When writing friendly letters, you normally use informal style. Informal writing is characterized by the use of:
· everyday vocabulary (for example: I had a great time)
· colloquial expressions/idioms (drop me a line)
· phrasal verbs (get on, settle in, stop by, etc.)
· short forms (can't, doesn't, didn't, I'm, etc.)
Informal letters are sent to people you know well (for example, friends, relatives, etc.) about your recent news, personal problems, information you need, etc. They are written in an informal style with a personal tone.
An informal letter should consist of:
· an informal greeting (Dear Mark/Aunt Marie, etc.)
· an introduction in which you write your opening remarks (for example, asking about your relative's health, etc.) and mention your reason for writing:
Hello! How are you? I thought I'd write and let you know that...;
· a main body in which you write the main subject(s) of the letter in detail, starting a new pharagraph for each topic;
· a conclusion in which you write your closing remarks
That's all my news for now. Write back soon...;
· an informal ending (for example, Lots of love/ Best wishes/etc. and your first name).

GOING GREEN
Write a composition with the following title( 80-120 words)
“Dear Julie….”. Imagine you are Julie’s mother/ father and she is living abroad. Write an e-mail(or an informal letter) to your daughter trying to persuade her NOT to turn vegetarian. Give as many reasons as possible.
You should include a personal comment in your composition.( 3 points)

AN INFORMAL GREETING:
You already have it. Dear Julie,…

AN INTRODUCTION
Here you will tell Julie why you are writing this letter.
For example:
I am writing this letter to tell you that…
MAIN BODY
Here you will write the reason/ reasons why you think it is not a good idea that Julie becomes vegetarian(for example, she’s too young to change her diet completely, she’s still developing her body, her muscles, she could have problems with her health because she can have a lack of proteins essential to live, her family are meat eaters, it’ll be very disappointing and difficult
for them to understand her decision, you can also tell her that it’s not a good idea that she follows a vegetarian diet when she is not at home and you won’t be able to look after her or check what she eats, you can also tell her that people should eat a balanced diet including meat, and loving animals has nothing to do with eating them to survive, the same animals do themselves, etc..)
CONCLUSION
Here you will give your personal opinion about the decision she has taken, you can be sensitive and comprehensive but also tell her to think it twice and perhaps she could change her mind.

AN INFORMAL ENDING
You can use structures like:
Love, mum
Lots of love, mum
